Smooth normal painting

To smooth out normal vectors using paint tool, do the following steps:

  1. Make sure you have Smooth Normal and Smooth Normal Use Mask (G) options turned on under the Geometry section. If Smooth Normal Use Mask (G) is off, it will smooth the whole terrain.

  1. Select the Geometry - Texture Painter, turn on Force Update Geometry.
  2. Select Mask mode.
  3. Under the Mask Painting section, set Channel to G (Smooth Normal Mask).
  4. Paint on the region where you want it to be smooth. Hold Ctrl (erase) to make it back to flat.

Low poly terrain Unity

Note: Smooth shading is highly dependent on mesh resolution. Increase Mesh (Base) Resolution to have better results. Mask Resolution also affects the look, too low gives bad blending, too high consumes more memory, 256 is fine.
